How do I stop annoying Robocalls and Robo Texts?

If your phone has been buzzing nonstop with robotic voices offering car warranties or suspicious texts claiming you’ve won a prize, you’re not alone. Robocalls and robo texts have become a growing nuisance in recent years—and for many, a serious invasion of privacy.

So, is there anything you can do about them?

What Are Robocalls and Robo Texts?

Robocalls are automated phone calls that deliver pre-recorded messages, often from scammers or telemarketers. Robo texts are similar—automated text messages usually trying to trick you into clicking a link or responding with personal information. Some are legitimate (think appointment reminders or school alerts), but the vast majority are spam or scams.

Why Are They So Common?

With cloud based technology, scammers can send out thousands of calls or texts for just pennies. Many even “spoof” numbers to make them look like they’re from your area code, tricking you into picking up.

Let’s fight back…

1. Register with the National Do Not Call List: Start here: donotcall.gov. This won’t stop scammers, but it does make it illegal for legitimate telemarketers to contact you after you register.

2. Use Call and Text Blocking Tools:

  • Your Carrier: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and others offer free or low-cost tools to identify and block spam calls.
  • Third-party Apps: Tools like Hiya, RoboKiller, Truecaller, and Nomorobo help block known spam numbers.
  • Phone Settings: Both iPhone and Android devices let you silence unknown callers or filter messages from unknown senders.

3. Report Suspicious Activity:

  • Report robocalls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
  • Forward suspicious texts to 7726 (which spells “SPAM”)

4. Don’t Engage: If you answer a robocall or respond to a spam text, you signal that your number is active, encouraging more messages. Don’t press numbers to opt out, don’t call them back, and don’t click any suspicious links.

5. Stay Informed: Scammers constantly evolve. Stay updated on new scams through sources like the FTC and consumer advocacy sites.

The Bottom Line

While it’s nearly impossible to stop robocalls and texts completely, you can reduce them dramatically with the right tools and habits. By blocking, reporting, and staying alert, you can take back some control over your phone—and your peace of mind.
